Professional Baseball
Brief Biography
After graduating from
Ohio University in 1968, Starr was named the
assistant athletic trainer at his alma mater under
head athletic trainer, Al Hart. During this tenure
he also received his Masters Degree in Education.
In October, 1971, he was named the head athletic
trainer for the Cincinnati Reds. During his 21
years in Cincinnati, he was a part of three World
Championships, 1975, ‘76, and ‘90 and along with his
former Reds’ assistant Dan Wright received the “MLB
Athletic Training Staff of the Year” award in 1991.
He also served as National League athletic trainer
for MLB All-Star Games in 1976, ’77, ’85, ’88, and
’95. In November, 1991, Larry was named the Head
Athletic Trainer for the Florida Marlins and played
a key role in the Marlins’ 1997 World Championship,
the quickest in MLB history. Starr served as the
Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society’s (PBATS)
Secretary from 1990-1995 and as its Historian from
1996-2001. During this tenure he completed the
first PBATS history entitled “Behind the Scenes.”
Larry received the
NATA’s 25-year Distinguished Service award in 1991
and served on the Public Relations Committee
1990-1995. He had the distinction of being inducted
in the Ohio Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame in April,
1994 and named “SEATA Professional Athletic Trainer
of the Year” in March, 1999.
After 30 years in
professional baseball, Starr returned to the
academic world as the Assistant Athletic
Director/Sports Medicine at Nova Southeastern
University in August, 2002. Larry is also a guest
lecturer in the athletic training curriculum,
physician assistant and physical therapy programs at
NSU.
In April, 2005, Larry
was also honored by being inducted into the Athletic
Trainers Association of Florida’s Hall of Fame and
was recently elected as Vice President of ATAF.
Larry is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning
Specialist and holds a Professional 2 level
certification with the United States Professional
Tennis Association.
Larry is an avid runner,
completing 15 marathons and is also an Elvis Presley
memorabilia buff. He and his wife Linda, a
certified reading specialist, have two grown
daughters, Laura and Amy. They reside in Coral
Springs, FL.
Brief Description of Presentation
Having served 30 years as a Head Athletic Trainer in
Major League Baseball, Larry will give a brief
description of the History of Sports Medicine in
Professional Baseball. The talk with center on the
changing scene in the preventive, surgical, and
rehabilitation areas of the sport. He will also give
his account of the evolution of anabolic steroids in
professional baseball.

Larry is currently the Assistant Athletic
Director/Sports Medicine and Guest Lecturer at Nova
