Brief Biography of Speakers

Gary Wilkerson is a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His research interests and expertise relate to ankle biomechanics, neuromuscular control of the lower extremity, and rehabilitation outcomes. His work has been published in Journal of Athletic Training, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Foot & Ankle International, Physician and Sportsmedicine, Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, and Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Athletic Therapy Today.

Brief Description of Presentation

The function of the subtalar joint is exceedingly complex and very poorly understood by many clinicians. This presentation will review the integrated biomechanics of the ankle and subtalar joints, and the influence of the subtalar joint on motions at the knee and hip. Discussion topics will include clinical evaluation of ankle instability, articular cartilage lesions as a cause of chronic dysfunction, long-term consequences of rotary ankle instability, and strategies for restoration of optimal ankle function.
