Brief Biography of
Speaker
Dr. Joel W. Beam is an
Associate Professor in the CAATE Accredited Athletic
Training Education Program in the Brooks College of
Health at the University of North Florida. He serves
as Program Director, Clinical Instructor Educator,
and Approved Clinical Instructor.
Dr. Beam earned his BS from East Carolina
University, MEd from Clemson University, and EdD
from the University of North Florida. He was a
graduate assistant athletic trainer at the
University of Florida and Clemson University prior
to becoming an assistant athletic trainer and
adjunct instructor at the University of Miami. Dr.
Beam then served as the head athletic trainer and
adjunct instructor at the University of North
Florida.
Dr. Beam currently is a reviewer for several
publishers and guest reviewer for numerous journals.
He has authored publications at the national and
international levels and the textbook Orthopedic
Taping, Wrapping, Bracing, and Padding. His primary
area of research interest is the effectiveness of
semi-occlusive and occlusive dressings on healing
rates of abrasions. Dr. Beam is also involved with
colleagues examining the effects of taping and
bracing techniques on forced ankle inversion pre-and
post-exercise.
Brief Description of
Presentation
The Mini-Course will
consist of a discussion of acute skin trauma, wound
healing, principles of wound management, and
evidence-based cleansing, debridement, and dressing
techniques. Daily monitoring of the patient/client
and follow-up guidelines will also be included. The
focus will be on the management of abrasions,
blisters, incisions, lacerations, avulsions, and
punctures sustained during physical activities and
the use of evidence-based equipment and techniques.
