Brief Biography of
Speaker
Jim
Kyle, M.D., FACSM
20-plus years of ER
experience. He has served as team physician for WVU,
Marshall and Glenville State College. Served as head
physician for US soccer under 17 world cup
championships. In 1996 he was team physician at the
Olympic Stadium for Track and Field.
Joan Reed, MAT, ATC
Reed has been at Emory University 12 years now.
Before joining the Emory Sport Medicine Team Reed
was employed by several Sports Medicine Clinics and
began her career at St. Joseph’s Hospital in
Parkersberg, WVA. Reed is a native of Steubenville,
Ohio, holds a Masters of Arts in Teaching from the
University of Louisville (1990). At Louisville Reed
served as Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer. She
received a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training
from Ohio University in 1988.
In conjunction with serving as the Head Athletic
Trainer at Emory she is a guest lecturer at Georgia
State University in the Graduate Sport Medicine
Program and has been a guest lecturer for the Emory
University Physical Therapy Program. Joan has
presented at the Georgia Athletic Trainers
Association Annual Symposium as well as the
Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association Annual
Symposium. In addition, she has been working part
time for the United States Soccer Federation since
1991. Reed served as a volunteer athletic trainer at
the United States Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs in the summer of 1994, the 1996
Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and served as the
athletic trainer for womens’ soccer at the 2007 Pan
American Games in Brazil.
She has been a certified member of the National
Athletic Trainers’ Association since1988. Reed is a
certified member of the National Strength and
Conditioning Association and a licensed athletic
trainer in the state of Georgia.
Brief Description of
Presentation
Review of the initial
assessment of the injured/downed athlete.
Application of the “Rule of 100” for accurate triage
and injury severity grading. Examples of heat
stress, head injury, and asthma emergencies will be
discussed.
Vital Signs Trending
Through this mini-course Certified Athletic Trainers
will
-Understand the importance of initial vital sign
assessment in the evaluation of sports trauma
-Describe expected trends in serial vital signs in
athletes with heat illness and asthma attacks
-Demonstrate understanding of vital sign trending in
unconscious athlete evaluation and management
