H.R.

would
amend
the

Lafayette
player
collapses;
stable
in
Memphis
by
John
Wilbert/NEMS
Daily
Journal
If
Sherquan
Herod
was
anywhere
but
in
Lafayette
High’s
gymnasium
Friday
night,
says
his
coach,
Nacoma
James,
then
he
probably
wouldn’t
be
alive
today.
Herod,
a
senior
forward
on
the
Lafayette
boys
basketball
team,
collapsed
onto
the
floor
from
his
seat
on
the
bench
during
the
second
quarter
of
Friday
night’s
home
game
against
Senatobia.
“I
told
his
momma
last
night
that
God
had
him
in
the
right
place
at
the
right
time,”
James
said
on
the
phone
early
Saturday
afternoon.
“Anywhere
else
on
the
planet,
on
the
whole
Earth,
he
probably
wouldn’t
be
with
us.”
Fortunately
for
Herod,
guys
like
certified
athletic
trainer
Vance
Holland,
athletic
director
Anthony
Hart,
James
and
a
slew
of
other
coaches
were
there
to
perform
CPR
and
apply
the
automated
external
defibrillator
to
the
unresponsive
Herod.
“A
lot
of
it
had
to
do
with
our
trainer
Vance
Holland,”
Hart
said
of
the
efforts
to
treat
Herod.
“He
was
running
the
show.
He
resuscitated
him
and
I
did
the
chest
compressions.
The
other
coaches
got
the
defibrillator.
It
was
really
the
help
of a
lot
of
people.”
In
the
second
quarter
of
Friday’s
game,
the
Commodores
had
just
made
a
layup
at
the
other
end
of
the
floor
to
pull
them
to
within
four,
at
19-15,
when
Herod,
who
had
started
the
game
but
had
been
pulled,
fell
out
of
his
seat
and
onto
the
floor.
“He
was
feeling
fine,”
James
said
of
his
player’s
status
early
in
the
game.
“I
was
just
telling
my
friends
that
with
the
flow
of
the
game,
I
don’t
really
know
why
I
took
him
out.
“The
last
thing
I
remember
was
that
Senatobia
had
called
a
timeout
and
Sherquan
was
in
the
huddle
patting
the
guys
on
the
back,
clapping
and
saying,
‘Let’s
go!’”
James
said.
And
the
only
thing
Herod
remembers
after
that,
says
James,
was
being
in
the
back
of
the
ambulance
that
would
take
him
to
Baptist
Memorial
Hospital-North
Mississippi.
“He’s
alert,”
added
James.
“He
was
alert
when
he
made
it
to
the
hospital
in
Oxford
last
night.
They
ran
tests
and
referred
him
to
Memphis.
“When
he
got
to
the
hospital,
the
first
question
he
asked
was,
‘How
did
you
guys
do?’
He
just
couldn’t
remember
anything.”
Friday’s
game
was
stopped
in
the
second
quarter,
and
a
date
for
the
game
to
be
either
continued
or
made
up
hadn’t
been
determined
as
of
Saturday,
said
Hart.
Saturday
morning’s
game
against
Hamilton
High
was
also
postponed
with
no
makeup
date
yet
scheduled.
Hart
said
he
expects
the
Lafayette
boys
basketball
team
to
still
host
rival
Oxford
on
Tuesday
night
as
originally
scheduled.
“We
didn’t
finish
the
game,”
James
said.
“We
all
headed
over
to
the
hospital.
Sherquan
was
up
and
talking,
alert
and
laughing.
“The
doctor
says
the
CT
scan
was
good
and
that
the
blood
is
working
good.
The
hospital
sent
him
to a
specialist
in
the
Memphis
area
to
see
what
really
happened.
“His
temperature
was
good.
His
blood
pressure
and
vitals
were
all
good.”
Precautionary
measures
Early
Saturday
afternoon,
James
arrived
at
Methodist
Le
Bonheur
Germantown
Hospital
to
see
Herod,
who
was
averaging
3
points
and
1
assist
per
game
this
season.
Herod,
who
had
been
diagnosed
with
a
heart
murmur
prior
to
the
season,
was
cleared
to
play
this
year
by
doctors.
“He
had
gotten
a
physical
– I
don’t
remember
the
exact
date
– in
either
October
or
November,
and
his
doctor
and
all
cleared
him
to
play,”
James
said.
“When
I
got
his
physical
back
and
I
found
out
about
the
heart
murmur,
I
then
spoke
with
Vance
Holland,
our
trainer.
He
then
checked
with
the
doctors
since
they
cleared
him
to
play.
“The
doctors
explained
to
him
(Holland)
that
everything
was
good
physically,
and
he
was
therefore
cleared
to
play.
...
There
were
no
signs
of
anything.
He’s
a
real
reserved
kid.
He
just
goes
along
with
everything.
He
was
fine,
in
my
concern,
going
into
the
season.”
However,
the
incident
will
signal
the
end
of
Herod’s
high
school
athletic
career.
He’s
scheduled
for
a
procedure
to
further
examine
his
heart
health
on
Tuesday.

SEATA
Corporate
Partnership
Committee
Report |
With the 2012 SEATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium just around the corner we are still working on getting new vendors/exhibitors to join us in Atlanta at the Renaissance Waverly. We will once again join forces with Emory Sports Medicine, where last year we had over 400 attendees. I would like to Thank our Corporate Partners, Gatorade, Bledsoe Braces, Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center and Multi Radiance Medical.
Please submit any new companies in your area who could become a new exhibitor or have them contact Rich Frazee at the address given. Please support our exhibitors, especially our Corporate Partners, as they help in making our SEATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium the great success that it has become.

White
House
Champions
of
Change:
Let’s
Move and
Physical
Activity |
The White House Champions of Change program highlights the stories and examples of citizens across the country that represents President Obama’s vision of out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the rest of the world through projects and initiatives that move their communities forward. More than one out of every three American children are overweight or obese, placing them at greater risk for chronic disease and contributing to rising health care costs, as well as declining productivity. In February 2009, the magnitude of this problem moved First Lady Michelle Obama to establish Let’s Move!, a comprehensive, collaborative initiative to end the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation. Last April, the White House hosted a Champions of Change event to highlight the work of chefs in improving school nutrition programs. This year, we are seeking recommendations of individuals and organizations that are increasing access to physical activity for children and young adults. One of five key pillars in the Childhood Obesity Task Force Report, regular physical activity is important to children’s healthy development, and has been linked to improved concentration and academic performance. That’s why, since the launch of Let’s Move!, Mrs. Obama has been focused on making sure our nation’s children eat healthier and become more physically active.
Tell us about an individual who is increasing access to physical activity for youth in your community. Use this form to nominate a champion to come to the White House to be honored for his/her work.
We are seeking adult champions (18 and over) who are working to increase access to physical activity for kids through some/all of the following:
Organized or competitive activities for teams and/or individuals, including youth with disabilities;
Unstructured play;
School-based activities, including physical education, recess and activity breaks;
Outdoor activities that promote time in nature;
Afterschool or summer programs.
Please submit nominations by midnight on January 23rd by utilizing this form. If submitting nominations after January 23rd for other Champions of Change recognition opportunities, please submit here.
