SEATA Seeking StarTRACK Leadership Scholars

NATA’S LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Last year NATA has initiated the StarTRACKS Leadership Development Program of self-study for athletic trainers wishing to create, improve, or refine their leadership skills.  Intended to assist members who wish to serve the profession as a volunteer leader at the state, district, or national level of their professional association, the skills and knowledge gained from this program will benefit athletic trainers in all aspects of their life.  The program is designed to have two (2) Leadership Scholars selected per district, per year.  In 2008 District IX selected Kristan Yates of Kentucky and Mary McLendon of Mississippi.  We are currently looking for 2009 scholars from District IX.  SEATA approved an allocation of up to $1000.00 per person selected by SEATA for the program.  While a limited number of members will be identified as ‘official’ participants, any member may have access to the curriculum.  Go to www.nata.org/members1/startracks/index.cfm for more information or contact Judy Pulice at judyp@nata.org.  To be considered for the 2009 District IX Leadership Scholar send a letter of application and current resume to R.T. Floyd at rtf@uwa.edu by March 15.

Mississippi News

The 2009 Mississippi Legislative Session began in January, and the MATA presented SB 2600 and HB 640 to update the Athletic Trainer Licensure Act of 1991.  After meetings and compromises, the MATA worked with the Mississippi Physical Therapy Association to develop a Committee Substitute Bill for both the House and Senate version that was supported by both professional associations.  On Feb. 12, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the Committee Substitute Bill after some boisterous opposition and failed amendments; the Senate also passed the Committee Substitute Bill with a remarkable majority vote.

The MATA commends the actions of every member that took the time to make phone calls, write letters and educate legislators to gain support for our legislation.  Our efforts are not over, and members are asked to please continue thanking legislators for their support, and again be willing to take action when the second round of voting soon starts.

March is quickly approaching and the MATA is looking for ideas to promote National Athletic Training Month and raise awareness of our profession.  Our legislative efforts have drawn attention and present a unique opportunity for us to take advantage and we must educate the public and other health care professionals.  If you or your employer are planning promotional activities, please contact your regional representative or an Executive Committee member so that the MATA can help publicize your efforts. Please send any photos to Donna at dwesleyatc@yahoo.com for inclusion in the next newsletter.

The MATA Annual Meeting will be held in Biloxi at the IP Resort & Spa beginning June 30 until July 2.  Registration material and hotel reservation information will be available soon; sponsorship and exhibitor space is still available and interested parties should contact Jeff Bryant at 601-606-5979 or
jeff.bryant@hpsd.k12.ms.us If you have a suggested topic or speaker for the annual meeting, please contact Tim Colbert at 662-719-9153 or tcolbert@deltastate.edu.
