Scott A. Byrd, ATC,

Candidate for
Vice President
Scott
A. Byrd, ATC, LAT is a graduate of Carson-Newman College. Scott feels like
he has been successful due to his background as an athlete which has trained him
to become a team player. Scott has served on numerous State and Local
boards and civic service committees; Scott is active with the Leadership Sevier
program which is highlighted by Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People. Scott has also utilized opportunities with in Covenant Health to
continually educate himself on becoming a more efficient health care leader.
Scott has been consistently active in the State level since 2001 and is looking
forward to working with the executive committee of SEATA and helping work to
continually expand the opportunities for the BEST health care profession,
Athletic Training.
Scott participated athletically playing collegiate
baseball at Lincoln Memorial University and on the international level with
Athletes in Action in Yugoslavia in 1991. He has also completed an
athletic trainer apprenticeship with the Knoxville Blue Jays in 1992. In
1993, 2002 and again in 2007, Scott has been an active participant providing
medical services for the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Knoxville. Scott was
the Head Athletic Trainer for Walters State Community College from 1997-1999.
In 1999, Scott began to work on what was to become the Sevier County Sports
Medicine Program. The program was officially contracted with the Sevier
County School system in August 2001. The program provides
certified/licensed athletic trainers to all four of Sevier County's high
schools. As program coordinator, Scott ensures that quality health care is
being provided to the schools and the standards of the program goals are being
met.
The Fort Sanders Sevier Sports Medicine Program Received
the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society's Corporate Award in January 2005.
Scott has received awards from the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society as the
Joe Worden Clinical / Professional Athletic Trainer of the Year for 2001.
He has also been recognized from the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association as
the Clinic /Corporate Award recipient in April 2005 and as the High School
Athletic Trainer of the year in 2007. In 2009 under his direction the
Sevier County Sports Medicine program received the TATS corporate award as well
as personally being recognized by the NATA SSATC/ Gatorade Secondary School
service award. Scott is currently serving as the TATS governmental Affairs
Chair having just finished his second term as Vice President of the Tennessee
Athletic Trainers Society.
Scott is excited about the opportunity to become the next
Vice President of SEATA. He has always valued the leadership structure of
Our great association. Scott looks forward to working together with some
of the greatest minds in athletic training to continue build upon the foundation
which has been set in place before us.
Scott is married to Carla Hasty Byrd and has three sons, Colton 5, Jackson 3,
and Hayden 1.
David T. Green, MA,
ATC, LAT
Candidate for
Vice President
David
T. Green, 57, heads into his 26th season as a Head Athletic Trainer on the
collegiate level with 23 years at Tennessee Tech University and the past two
years as the Director of Sports Medicine at Eastern Kentucky University. This
will be his 34th year in the profession. Beginning his tenure at Tech as a
one-man operation, he was the driving force behind developing the university's
sports medicine program and expanding the scope and quality of services
available to student-athletes.
During his career, nearly 70 of his student athletic trainers have gone on to
prominent positions in the high school, college and professional ranks.
Green was inducted in into the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society's (TATS)
Hall of Fame (2003), coming on the heels of being named Most Distinguished
Athletic Trainer by the NATA. In 2004 he was awarded the SEATA Award of
Merit and in 1996, he received a NATA National Service Award. In 2008, he was
inducted into the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association, Hall of Fame.
David was co-host to 10,000 in attendance at the NATA National Meeting and
Clinical Symposium in Nashville in 2003, sharing these duties with Chuck Kimmel,
then District Director for District 9 (SEATA). In 1997 he received a 25-year
award from NATA.
David graduated from Middle Tennessee State in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in
health, physical education and recreation. His master's degree in health
education came in 1977 from Eastern Kentucky, prior to a three-year stint as a
Teacher/Athletic Trainer at Paul G. Blazer High School in Ashland, Ky. He
became the first certified athletic trainer in Kentucky working on the high
school level, while covering all athletics at Blazer. He also taught
health courses along with a health careers course. He is proud to say that
Blazer High School has maintained a teacher/athletic trainer since 1977 and is
one of the premier programs in Kentucky. A.J. Stadelmeyer is the current
teacher/athletic trainer and is a former athletic training student of David’s.
David is currently the Exhibits Chair for the Southeast Athletic Trainers’
Association, Inc. having served in this capacity since 1993. He is also a
current member of the NATA Honors and Awards Committee – MDAT Sub-Committee. He
is the past President of the Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society from 1998 –
2002 and was member of the SEATA Executive Board. During his tenure as
President of TATS, a change was made from a Certification for our Athletic
Trainers to a Licensure, with help of Dr. David Adams and Mr. Nick Pappas from
our TATS Governmental Affairs Committee.
As an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Eastern Kentucky, Dr. Bobby Barton, then
Head Athletic Trainer at EKU and SEATA District Director appointed David to
represent SEATA on NATA Board of Certification. David was a member of the
NATABOC Committee from 1982-1986 and has been involved with certification exam
construction, administration of the exam throughout SEATA and implementation of
the written simulation portion of the exam. This appointment started him on a
long career of working for the athletic training profession.
During the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, David was a volunteer, working in the
main Athletic Training room in the Olympic Village. He also participated as a
volunteer at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in 1999. He has
also volunteered for the Tennessee Sports Festival, the Bluegrass State Games
and has participated at various Cramer Student Athletic Trainers Workshop at
Austin Peay State University, Eastern Kentucky University and at Vanderbilt
Sports Medicine.
He has had the opportunity to present talks at the National Athletic Trainers
Association, Annual Symposium, SEATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium,
SEATA Student Athletic Trainers Clinical Symposium and both the Tennessee
Athletic Trainers Society Annual Meeting and the Kentucky Athletic Trainers
Society Annual Meeting. The various topics ranging from BOC issues and exam
preparation, Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries, Exhibitors and Product Development
over the past 35 years. David is also very proud that he had the privilege
to never miss our SEATA Annual Meeting over the past 35 years.
David and his wife, Brenda, have been married for 29 years and have two
daughters, Danielle (24) and Kaycee (19). Danielle became a certified athletic
trainer in 2009 and is currently working toward a master’s degree in Sports
Administration and hopes to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy. Kaycee is
currently a sophomore at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, were she is a
member of the volleyball team and is majoring in Graphic Design.
Bob Hammons, MEd, ATC, LAT
Candidate for
Vice President
Bob
Hammons is the Director of Client Relations and Sports Medicine Outreach
Coordinator for Orlando Orthopaedic Center in Orlando, Florida. In addition to
his primary responsibilities, Bob coordinates biannual seminars for healthcare
professionals and acts in an intermediary role with the Florida Tuskers UFL team
and the East-West Shrine Game. In the past, Bob has held Athletic Training
positions in the collegiate, clinical, and high school settings. Bob received
both his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and Exercise Science
and his Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Bob is currently serving
on the ATAF Executive Board as the Vice President and on the NATA Convention
Program Committee project team. He held the position of ATAF Secretary for
three years and ATAF Central Representative for one year. Bob was previously
appointed to the position of ATAF Education Committee Chair and served in this
capacity for seven years. Other past professional involvement includes:
District 9 Multi-Media Committee member, BOC certified examiner, BOC examiner
trainer, BOC District 9 examiner training workshop coordinator, and Clinical
Instructor for the Athletic Training Programs at Florida Southern College,
Florida State University, and the University of Central Florida.
Bob was recently honored with the 2009 ATAF Presidential award. Prior to this
honor, he was recognized with the 2000 ATAF Athletic Trainer of the Year award,
2002 ATAF Backbone award, and 2008 ATAF Clinical/Corporate Athletic Trainer of
the Year award.
Bob is married to the former Glenda Quarles. They live in Oakland, Florida with
their two miniature dachshunds, Ruthie and Molly.
Karen M. Lew, MEd.,
ATC, LAT
Candidate for
Vice President
Karen
will join the University of Miami as a lecturer and Clinical Coordinator in the
Athletic Training Education Program this Fall. Over the past twelve years, Karen
served in a variety of capacities at Southeastern Louisiana University. Most
recently, she served as the Program Director of the Athletic Training Education
Program. She is involved with the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic
Training Education, the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association, the Southeast
Athletic Trainers Association, and the National Athletic Trainers Association.
In 1996, Karen received her Bachelor of Science degree and Certification for
K-12 Health and Physical Education at the University of New Orleans in New
Orleans, Louisiana. Karen earned her Master of Education degree in Human
Performance with an emphasis in Exercise Science in 1997 from the University of
Louisiana at Monroe, Monroe, Louisiana.
Karen is truly committed to seeing the profession of Athletic Training continue
to grow and flourish as well SEATA and the NATA. Over the past twelve years,
Karen has served on a variety of committees at the state, regional, and national
level. Her committee involvement in SEATA has been with the Student Symposium.
She has presented at the Student SEATA symposium on a consistent basis and has
served as the coordinator of sponsorships the past four years. In addition to
her involvement with the Student SEATA meeting, she is currently serving as the
Co-chair of the SEATA educators meeting. Over the past four years, she has
served as a member of the College and University and the Scholarship committees
for SEATA as the Louisiana representative.
Karen was also very active within the LATA. She served on the LATA’s Executive
Committee for the past six years serving as the Director of Continuing
Education. As the Director of Continuing Education, she chaired the Education
Committee. She played a large roll in meeting planning, hotel selections, and
program development for the state’s annual meeting. She was also influential in
adding a winter educational symposium each December.
Karen’s interests include Learning and Teaching Styles in Athletic Training and
Drug and Alcohol use and abuse among college students and student athletes.
Karen has several publications including, Athletic Training Exam Review: “A
Student Guide to Success”, Fourth Edition, and has been published by the NATA
and Cramer Athletics for her work in preventing and reducing injuries in
cheerleading. She regularly participates as an athletic trainer and medical
support staff for Varsity Spirit Corporation, including the National Collegiate
Cheer and Dance Championships, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the
London New Year’s Day Parade.
